On January 2, U.S. electric vehicle maker Tesla announced that it delivered 1.636 million vehicles worldwide in 2025, representing a year-on-year decline of approximately 8.6 percent. This marks the first time in Tesla's history that its annual global EV sales have been surpassed by Chinese automaker BYD.

Tesla reported that it delivered 418,000 vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2025, reflecting a year-on-year decline of 15.6 percent and falling short of analysts' expectations of around 434,000. Thus, its total deliveries for the entire year fell to 1.636 million, a decrease from 1.79 million in 2024, and also lower than the market expectation of about 1.65 million.

China's automotive giant BYD revealed on January 1 that its total new vehicle sales in 2025 exceeded 4.6 million units, representing a year-on-year increase of about 8 percent. Meanwhile, its new pure EV sales surpassed 2.25 million units, reflecting a growth of around 28 percent. This marks the first time BYD has topped the global pure EV sales leader board.
